This is Korey Stringer, a former player for the Minnesota Vikings. During a Vikings practice in August 2001   Stringer began vomiting and complained of dizziness. His body temperature had exceeded 108 degrees Fahrenheit. Despite having a professional medical team on-site, his dehydration was discovered when it was too late.

Heat stroke caused by dehydration is a leading cause of death and disability among high school students. Heat stroke from dehyrdation leads to 4.000 emergency room visits in the U. S. per year

An estimated 75% of Americans are dehydrated and many don’t even realize it. Though dehydration is not a major cause of death, it causes health complications like reductions in muscle mass, low blood oxygen levels, and liver damage. When a person feels thirsty, they are actually already dehydrated.  Thus, there exists a need for a method of detecting a low hydration level before a person becomes dehydrated.
