Hydration’s Effect On Performance:
Dehydration’s Negative Effect on Performance
- Studies have shown that muscle strength performance decreases at dehydration levels equal or larger than 5% of body weight
- Performance in high intensity exercise, such as running, is reduced by 45% due to a dehydration level of 2.5% of body weight
- Besides dehydration’s negative effects on athletic performance, it reduces blood oxygen levels which reduces cognitive performance
- A small,1.5% decrease in hydration level, has been shown to reduce muscle strength in one rep of bench presses
- Thus, a small decrease in hydration level has a drastic effect on muscle strength
- The amount of water within cells is positively correlated to the amount of muscle breakdown
